One Response to Penrose Point State Park

My husband and I have done a fair amount of truck camping the past eight years. Penrose Point Park is nice enough…large wooded sites, saltwater….crabbing, low tide opportunities to see sea life, and clamming, clear signage. Kids love riding their bikes around on the very safe campground road.

My gripe is with the staff. Washington State is suffering from lack of funding, thus cutback in staffing and has had to resort to charging for a Discovery Pass ($30) per year to get into state parks for the day or $10.00 per visit. Camping, is $25.00 a night at Penrose, no hook-ups, coin operated showers, RV dump available, no potable water at the dump site. Water is available via their outdoor taps (you can put your hose on to fill your water tank).

We had prepaid for two nights as we were with a church group. We had a copy of our paperwork, etc. We came in to camp exhausted on Friday night at 7:30 pm, had to set up, fix dinner, etc. As we entered the Park we saw the registration booth, but it was close AND there was no really easy place to park our RV without blocking the entryway. We planned to check in in the morning which is acceptable at other parks we have gone to (provided you pre-pay, of course).

So at about 9:00 that night, a ranger or assistant knocks on our camper door. He says we need to register. We say we have already prepaid and will register in the a.m. I offer to show him our paperwork. He says that isn’t good enough, and that we need a receipt??? I say the office is closed!!! How is writing out my own receipt on their envelope PROOF that I have actually paid and registered?????? I was very polite, but slowly was losing my cool. My husband and I were exhausted (long drive), it was pitch black out AND the booth was a long walk from our campsite. Eventually, this brilliant and diligent state worker decided to write the receipt out for us. I was NOT a happy camper at that point.

Then, on our last day, as we were ready to leave on Sunday, I realized I did not have my set of keys. Fortunately, my husband had his keys. I checked the registration booth and it was closed (probably should have tried to figure out where the camp host was). We left and then I assumed that I could call on Monday and ask if my keys were found. I call on a Monday and leave a voice message for the “staff”. No one called me back. I called that following Friday and spoke to the booth attendant and explained my situation. She said she would check after her dinner and would call me the next day (Sat). She never called back.

The campground is nice, but the staff leaves MUCH to be desired! They are NOT helpful in the least. I have been to many many campgrounds over the years, and while this one is an adequate campground, the staff certainly is not.
