Grand Coulee Dam - Grand Coulee Dam is the largest hydroelectric facility in North America and was the key to the development of power generated by Columbia River, the most productive hydroelectric producing river in the United States. Part of the Columbia Basin Project, which irrigates more than 600,000 acres, it is responsible for water control, including flood prevention, on the Columbia River. Construction of the Grand Coulee Dam lasted from 1933 through 1942. Lake Roosevelt's 82,000 acres and 600-mile shoreline, part of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area, is formed by the Grand Coulee Dam and offers a variety of recreation. The Grand Coulee Dam Visitors Center offers a variety of exhibits. Free guided Grand Coulee Dam tours take you through the Third Power plant, including a ride on an incline elevator.
