Defend What’s Yours—Your State Parks

California State Parks Logo California state parks belong to you, but not for long. Six months from now 25 percent of your parks will be closed unless you step up to defend them.’

This is the message we at the California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) are taking public today by launching a series of television public service announcements (PSAs) that will air statewide starting this week. The tagline? Defend What’s Yours. This new public awareness effort aims to empower citizen action and mobilize grassroots support to save the nation’s biggest and best state park system.

It’s time for all Californians to familiarize themselves with the fact that 70 state parks are going to close this July 1. Of course, last week’s hastily-organized press conference by Gov. Brown to announce his Fiscal Year 2012-13 state budget didn’t help either. It called for potentially eliminating all seasonal lifeguards and 20 percent of ranger positions in California state parks if the governor’s November ballot initiative for new revenue isn’t successful.  Despite the fact that a decision on that initiative is ten months away, the governor is demanding that these state park reductions be made this spring.

State beaches without lifeguards? Do you know how many rescues these lifeguards perform in a year? An average of 10,000 rescues! Imagine a nice sunny day at a state beach in Santa Cruz with a strong rip tide just offshore, and no lifeguards.

It’s time to say enough is enough. Enjoy the videos, and please join us in this fight to defend state parks.

Do you want to be a defender?
