Recreation near 5 Star RV Park

Where do we go for fun?

Well, that depends on your idea of fun. The local Chamber of Commerce has many suggestions, it’s just off North Broadway in central Tyler, north of the Square.

The Caldwell Zoo is rightfully well known, it houses a number of indigenous and exotic species in super-clean and humane surroundings. We know that zoos are not top of many people's ‘must-see’ list, but the Caldwell really is an exception.

The Rose Gardens, Museum and Fair Grounds are on the US 31 West inside the Loop 323 and have various exhibitions on year round.

There’s a flea market on the US 69 North, about halfway between the Loop 323 and the I-20, it operates on the 3rd weekend of the month.

Fishing and boating can be had on many local lakes, in Hawkins to the north and Lakes Palestine and Tyler to the south.
The Tiger Creek big cat refuge is on the FM 14 heading north towards Hawkins, and has all sorts of big cats rescued from circuses, zoos and private owners.

If you have kids, or if it’s raining (or both) there is a Discovery Science place on North Broadway, (just north of the Square) which is better than you may think.

A little further afield but well worth the drive is the East Texas Oil Museum located on the campus of Kilgore College, in Kilgore (903) 893 8295, and the entry price is a bargain.

Classical music lovers should see the East Texas Symphony Orchestra’s program at www.etso.org or (903) 526 ETSO.

The Tyler Museum of Art is just off Fifth Street at S. Mahon Avenue and again is good value (903) 959 1001, it's right beside the Tyler Junior College.

Also of interest is the Hudnal Planetarium, details at http://planetarium.tjc.edu, they’re on the Tyler Junior College campus off 5th Street.

Of course the First Monday Trade Days in Canton are worth a visit (or two, or three).

There’s also the Gladewater Opry House that offers Gospel Music on Friday nights and Country on Saturdays.

Brookshire’s Stores have a Museum and Country Store on the Southwest Loop, next to the enormous depot.

There’s the Historic Aviation Museum on Pound’s Airfield  with a variety of old aircraft.

Tyler City’s Goodman Museum is located on North Broadway Just north of the railroad bridge. Entry is free but they do like a donation, suggested at $2 minimum.

Directions to 5 Star RV Park

From the I 20: From the I-20 exit 560 go south 2.3 miles.  If you're arriving in the dark, please note that no matter if you are coming from the East or the West, you MUST turn right at the first 'T' junction immediately you exit the I-20 to get to Lavender Road. Actually you do the same thing in the daylight too, it's just that you can see better where to go in daylight.  You then head South, which is a right turn if you were coming from the West, and a left turn if you were coming from the East.  Again, for those arriving in daylight, you will see a white water tower at the top of an incline, we're directly opposite.  At night look for the lit signs and flags on your right and the white strobe light on the water tower.

From the North Loop 323 round Tyler: If you are coming from the east, cross the FM14 traffic lights and look for Adams Furniture on your right.  Lavender Road (or CR 35, it's the same thing) is at the top of the incline, on your right immediately after Adams'.  It it NOT well signposted - there's a tiny sign you would need a telescope to read at 100 yards.  It's about 0.6 miles from the FM 14 traffic lights to Lavender Road. If you see a sign for Broadway pointing left, you've gone too far, turn back and try again.

If you are coming from the west, Lavender Road is about 2.3 miles past the US Highway 69 traffic lights. On the way you will go over railroad tracks and see a sign to the right for Broadway (but don't take the turn). Start easing left into the passing lane, in the central median you will see a 'No Entry' sign followed by a 'WRONG WAY' sign (both intended for people driving in the wrong carriageway) and a 'Leaving Tyler City Limits' sign.  Then, at the top of a slight rise, there is a crossing in the central median, that is the turn for Lavender Road. There are no sign posts for Lavender Road that give you any warning, and it's difficult to see because the crossing is hiding just over the brow of the incline.  If you see Adams' Furniture store on your left, you have gone too far, but that's all right, there are plenty of turning spots in the median for you to turn round and try again.  Simply follow the instructions and don't panic, we try to be worth the effort.

Now you've found Lavender Road, go 2.4 miles North.  In the day you will see a white water tower on the right and the site on the left.  At night there's a red and a strobe light on top of the water tower, and look for flags and the sign on your left.
